It is day 126 in the year 2023, and some of us aren’t sure of what our goals are looking like, but we make progress regardless. This is a thing of pride if you celebrate your little wins and a reason for depression if you think happiness is at the end of the tunnel.
Happiness - A desire that craves satisfaction; there is a dopamine level that comes with achieving a goal or living the perceived dream, this form of happiness can be achieved on a regular basis but is sometimes destroyed by an unconscious desire to gain more.
Have you ever read through the Forbes list and then a 26-year-old CEO with a billion-dollar company pops in your face? The next question is, what am I doing with my life?
This might be hard to digest, but the same way you admire that CEO is the same way some people wish they were at your current level. If you scoffed at that principle, then you apparently don’t rate yourself enough to be celebrated. I understand, but then it is day 140 of the year, what have you gained or achieved this year?
I tend to worry about what opportunities I probably missed along the way, but have you taken the time to think about what opportunities you gained but did not deserve?
Live life with minimal regrets, and be grateful for what you’ve gained. Stop bugging over what is yet to be - recall, that Dangote is probably Elumelu’s competition, but some people just want to be half of what Elumelu is. Do you understand what this means?
There is an interesting story about the king’s lust and the slave’s desire, here is a summary: there are three characters, the king, the palace slave, and the street peasant
The king eats all fancy delicacies on a golden plate but is worried that his gold vault is not as large as other kings.
The palace slave eats the king’s delicacies on a wooden plate but is worried that he is not king.
The street peasant eats from the city farm but is worried that he is not a palace slave
Recall that they all eat from the same farm, and most importantly, they all have food.
You shouldn’t be complacent with growth simply because you achieved a milestone and hence it is a little win. At the same time, don’t suffocate yourself with ambition that you fail to acknowledge the factors that brought you this far. It is a slippery slope, but balance is needed. Time is a constant factor for change, but even the best of us always have to wait.
So, is it a graduation, a certification, or a trade? A new formula, giant financial strides, or an extra 5k in piggyvest savings ( yes, 5k is money! ). Celebrate the wins, and aim for bigger wins, but remember as I learned from a good source - Happiness is not in the destination, it is at every phase of the journey.
Like J Cole said - there is no such thing as a life that is better than yours.
Enjoy your weekend,
Abiodun.
Thank you!
Where have you being 😕😟
