You’ll want to read this slowly, but intelligently.
My name is Abiodun, I grew up in Lagos state and I must say, it is fun growing up in the big city
Ikotun - growing up in a community with little regard for education and a high sense of violence and hooliganism, education was the only thing to set us apart as better off than average.
Growing up my generation seemed to understand statements like, can’t you see your mate? Does he have two heads? Our elders, teachers and parents began to breed a competitive spirit as a mindset right from infancy.
Well for a generation that claims to be better than the past, I’ll simply classify us as an upgraded version. The difference is, we're not on the play store.
Stay with me…
We are constantly validating success on social media. Our societal values are measured by the clothes we wear, the phones we use and the cars we drive. So an iPhone sets you apart as bigger, and anyone using an android device is simply not worth the conversation. We’ve recreated the competitive phase as young people and dare I say, we are extremely good at it. Ever wondered what it would look like when we have kids?
Forgive my fallacy of generalisation as I do not imply that this is an attitude everyone exhibits. But many have lost focus, a lot more tend to do the same.
Moving on…..
I do not enjoy writing long articles, but if you decided to follow along on this one. You’ll find out that we are long gone from changing the narrative, we simply got better at it. This is the truth about competition, no one wins.
It honestly makes no sense that many young people would take unimaginable risks to afford what is higher than their pay grade just to prove a point - “I am in vogue”. Question is, do you remember when the iPhone 6 used to be the talk of the town and people sold their kidneys for the latest iPad in 2017? Would you sell your kidney for an iPhone 6 now?
Truth is that many start from humble beginnings, endeavour to get rich only to humble those just beginning.
But Biodun would simply write..
He simply hopes you share.
Hmm,I must say you have really spoken well....I just hope that as youths we realize that competition only tear us apart that build up...nice one Biodun
Also; youth lack patience.....Patience to believe in themselves that they can make it given it's time, patience even in trusting the country's system even if we are almost at the worst level of the economy....but (NO, we only want to see the system change almost immediately)......
